Chapter 30
âHas Larne got back to us yet?â Chief Dunne asked during Tuesday morningâs briefing.
âNot yet, sir. We got talking with William Samuel yesterday and got a sample of his DNA.â
Fleur Hewitt asked after his brother, âHe has a criminal past.â
âRobbery,â I said, having a new understanding of Arthur. âHe was hurt in his past.â
âAnd hurt people hurt people,â Hewitt said.
âI suppose youâre right, maâam, but Arthur was more about thieving than hurting people.â
âSo, if I stole from you, you wouldnât be hurt?â asked Chief Dunne.
âIâm not saying that,â I said delicately, feeling attacked. I could say that Arthur was sexually abused, but I didnât, mainly because they wouldnât give a shit. âSir, I want to speak to Anita Hall some more. She is the sister of Kenneth, our young eyewitnesses,â I added.
âI believe he withdrew his statement,â said the chief.
âI donât know if it was that clear cut.â
âYou have all Napierâs notes to go by.â
âWe do, yes, Chief, but Anita told me that soon after, Kenneth drank antifreeze and was brain-damaged. He lives in a care facility now. And his sister, well, I think she knows more than she let on.â
âShe admitted to the murder herself back in the day,â said Fleur Hewitt.
âWhat?â I asked. This was news to me.
The chief perked up at this.
âShe gave a few statements.â Hewitt lifted them up.
âWhere did you get those?â
âI did some plundering in those boxes.â
âThere was another one?â asked Higgins, exasperated.
âNo, these were in one labelled 1978, Hall. A different case. I can only imagine our man Mack put it in the wrong box.â
âWhat age would Anita have been in 1978?â asked Dunne.
âFifteen, sir,â I said.
âCould she have done it?â he asked.
âShe and Karen would likely have been the same height. Itâs not unthinkable.â
âDonât underestimate the female of the species,â said Higgins. I wouldnât; Iâd done that before, to my peril.
âWhy didnât Napier charge Anita?â I asked Hewitt.
âBecause,â she said, âAnita also gave a statement to say it was Wayne Simpson.â
âMack had his mind made up.â
âIs that everything?â asked Chief Dunne, reminding me of a worker at a fast-food drive-thru, rushing us to be done, handing us our order while we were still driving.
âNo, Chief,â said Hewitt, âAnita also gave a statement that she suspected Karenâs boyfriend, but she never gave a name, and we know now that it was unlikely she had a boyfriend.â
âNapier probably saw her as a nuisance,â said Higgins.
âWhat about Willie Samuel? Was he not Karenâs boyfriend?â asked Dunne.
âJust a crush, it seems,â I said, âhe had a brief teenage fling, if you could even call it that, with Janet.â
Greg Dunne coughed. âOkay, so moving on,â he said, âSloane, speak to Anita Hall and find out who this boyfriend of Karenâs was. Get DNA for her too, to be on the safe side.â
Hewitt leafed through her papers. âNapier wrote that, in a suicide note, Anita said she knew who did it â he presumed she was talking about Karenâs murder â her mother gave the note to police.
