Sarah whips around as soon as I drop the word between us. I’m not surprised she is here, but I am surprised that she is speaking to someone on the phone about me. Don’t get me wrong, if I was her, I’d be sharing this story with all my friends over the years, getting their opinion on what they think went down moments before Jeremy Finch died, but hearing someone else talk about you right in front of you, is a bit awkward.

“I gotta go,” she says into the receiver.

She drops the arm that is resting across her chest and lets it hang by her side, as her other one grips the phone, frozen. She has the same toned body she had over twenty years ago, and I feel a pinch of jealousy. It was no different than it was back then. She never really knew me before Jeremy died, and if she did, she would know just how green with envy I was. Gosh, she had everything I wanted. The looks, the man, the attention of my father. All these thoughts mash together in my mind and force out my next words. “So, who were you talking to?”

“My husband.”

I thought she was separated from him, but I don’t bring it up. “And he knows why you’re here?” The question is a genuine one but it comes out curt. I need her to know that I know why she’s here. I’m curious about her past, her daughter, what she has been up to since Jeremy died. How much of her life she was able to get back after I stole a piece of it.

“Now he does.”

She stands rigid and I’m not sure whether she is going to charge me and pummel me or use her muscular arms to throw me over this ledge and into the ocean. God knows she has the strength to do that. I’m certain all the tactics she learned in boot camp would come right back to her when ignited. I imagine myself hitting my head on a rock below, a fitting death for everything I caused back then. I’m not as scared as I thought I would be, coming face to face with her. It’s odd, it’s like a feeling of finality. Maybe I’ll feel better after I admit what I did.

“Do you want to sit down?” She surprises me with the request, but I haven’t thrown out the possibility that she will still try to kill me, getting that sweet revenge I imagine she is after.

“Sure.” I follow her to a white picnic table that is in front of a higher fence that blocks the breeze. The sound of muffled voices and music penetrates the air, spilling out from the venue where my best friend is about to go on stage. Leave it to the two of us to have one of our biggest life moments happen on the same day.

She sits in the chair opposite me. “So, you remember me?”
