Since women are more responsive to internal hormonal flows, lymphatic problems are more apparent. Women suffer problems at the rate of 8 to 10 times that of men. One of the reasons is that excessive female hormones tend to aggravate any predisposition one might have. This may occur with some oral contraceptives, especially if poorly prescribed. A hormone depressing drug (Danazole) tends to help in some cases, but it is temporary. It may also have significant adverse side effects. Then too, females seen to have thirst perversions at a rate much higher than men which causes them to suffer from borderline dehydration. Females that present with these conditions seldom drink much water and often speak of their dislike for the taste of it. Very often, the first presenting symptom will be tenderness around the breast especially just before her period. The breast is particularly vulnerable since it is made of passive tissue (adipose and glandular) and therefore must be drained by osmotic force, whereas the muscle movement forces fluid flow in most other tissue. (See Figure 5).

A series of one way valves, much like those found in the venous system prevent the return of the lymphatic fluid toward gravity. That is why exercise is so useful. In sedentary people, the lymph tens to stagnate in about twenty minutes. To some degree after that, the cells are exposed to their own toxic waste. The acceleration of breathing rapidly pushes on the thoracic duct that lies on the inner aspect of the spine, increasing flow and almost acting as a pump for the rest of the system. The exception to this is when the lymph system is blocked in certain areas, exercise will increase metabolic waste which then will tend to accumulate distal to (beyond) the blocked area where it will be difficult to remove. Accumulations of this type are what have been referred to as “CELLULITE”. Initially, these infiltrates are strictly fluid waste, but after a long period, if the situation is not corrected, fibrosis sets in. At that time, the condition is much harder and time consuming to treat. Diet can and often does contribute to the problem. Caffeine is a potent enemy of the lymphatic system. This is why many physicians recommend removing all caffeine from the diet of women with fibrocystic breast disease. Many studies have shown this correlation. Using diet modulation and Lymphatic Massage, it has been demonstrated in many cases that the condition resolves itself without any other invasive intervention.

Beyond this, high fat, high protein diets tend to cause problems in the lymph system. The incomplete digestion of proteins result in absorption of peptides and other debris in the process of metabolism. Fats from the intestinal tract are absorbed into the blood through the lacteals which are part of the lymph system. If the system is at all compromised, heavy fat intake makes it all the more sluggish. However, through the technique of Lymphatic Massage, the molecular structure of fat in the lymph stream is changed from gelatinous to liquid, and the sluggish lymph stream is accelerated.
