From Corrections to Solutions
Not only do successful entrepreneurs use PCP with their employees, they also teach their employees to use PCP when communicating with them. Entrepreneurs appreciate an employee offering a solution when they see something or someone that needs to be corrected. A true correction is seeing and communicating about something thatâs not working and then offering a possible way to resolve it. If someone only points out whatâs wrong without offering a solution, then all they are really doing is complaining, and successful entrepreneurs hate complaining. I imagine many employees have felt like their boss was complaining about something because they donât understand that continual correction is absolutely necessary to keep a company on track. Like driving a car or flying an airplane, the driver or pilot must make hundreds, even thousands of small corrections in order to stay on track and eventually arrive at their destination. Without corrections there is no such thing as success.
Running a successful company demands that you make many corrections. As long as you are using PCP, your corrections will rarely be received as a complaint. Now, I do know average and below average entrepreneurs who complain a lot, and their complaining has run off some good employees and customers because they didnât understand the destructive power of it. Also, I imagine that millions of employees have lost their jobs because they were whiners. Whether you are an entrepreneur or an employee, complaining causes you to lose, correcting causes you to win. Complaining creates problems, it doesnât solve them. So practice using PCP to make sure that you arenât just complaining and creating problems for yourself. As an entrepreneur I understand that solutions create successes, so I choose to praise people before offering a correction so that there will be a spirit of cooperation instead of conflict. Once someone perceives something you say as a complaint instead of a sincere correction, it is very easy to allow the conversation to escalate into a fight. At the least, complaining can create resentment, but sincere compliments before corrections allow a mutual respect to remain present. If youâd like to operate your business with more respect and less resentment among people, get good at PCP. If the word praise doesnât resonate with you, then call it The C3 Strategy: Compliment, Correct, Compliment. People love to be complimented! Complimenting creates cooperation, and cooperation allows people to work together smoothly and find solutions. Praise, or complimenting, is a very simple and powerful strategy to help you create more success and enjoy the process more because there is less stress and more peace between people, and thatâs always a wonderful thing.
