The very first element you must take into consideration when shopping for a new speaker is its impedance. It is especially important to match your speaker’s impedance with your amplifier’s impedance to avoid damaging your equipment. Guitar speakers come in three different impedances: 4, 8 and 16 ohms. You can often find this value written on the back of your speaker, so it is easy to swap like with like.

The second element is output. The speaker output affects distortion. Unlike with impedance, you are not obliged to match the speaker output with that of your amp, although this is recommended, as the only basic rule is that your amp head’s power output shouldn’t exceed the wattage rating of your speakers. A mismatch will affect the clarity of your sound. A weaker-output speaker will naturally break up earlier and a stronger-output speaker will tend to keep its clarity even when pushed harder.
