Chapter Nine

THE STRANGE BUZZING sound grew louder as the thin figure of Iron Eyes moved out of the shadows opposite the hotel with a cutting rope in his hands. He had the rope spinning above his head at such a speed that it sounded like a swarm of angry hornets. Iron Eyes had waited until he was positive that the hired gunman on the veranda had emptied every bullet from his guns. Then he started to advance across the street with the spinning loop of his cutting rope above his head. His narrowed eyes stared up at the confused Davy Cooper who was leaning over the veranda.

A pool of orange light cascaded over the bounty hunter as he stepped into it. The answer Cooper had been seeking suddenly appeared.

Cooper felt his heart quicken at the hideous sight. It was like looking into the bowels of Hell. Iron Eyes kept walking toward the hotel with the rope held in his bony hand spinning faster and faster above his head.

The gunman’s eyes widened in terror.

‘Iron Eyes,’ he gasped.

The words had only just crept from his lips when he saw the pitifully thin bounty hunter release the twirling lasso and propel it up at him. The rope wriggled through the desert air like a sidewinder.

Frantically Cooper went to fire and then realized that he had not finished reloading his six-shooter. As his hands attempted to close the partially loaded chamber of the weapon he felt the large circle of rope surround him.

Seeing that his aim was true Iron Eyes leaned back and tugged on the rope as it fell over Cooper’s torso. The lasso tightened as the bounty hunter gave one mighty pull on its taut length.

The lasso had wrapped around the gunman’s arms and chest.

Iron Eyes gritted his teeth and mustered every ounce of his strength. He gave a massive tug.

Cooper screamed and was lifted off his feet. He flew helplessly over the railing and then fell like stone from his high perch.

Iron Eyes released his hold on the rope as Cooper hit the ground head first. A cloud of dust rose up from where the gunman had crashed into the sand.

Even before the skeletal figure began to run toward the prostrate body he knew that the gunman was dead.

He had heard Cooper’s neck snap as it had impacted into the unforgiving street. The bounty hunter reached the body and stared down upon it.

Iron Eyes knelt and stared at the dead man just as Lane and Wood came rushing out of the alley twenty feet away from the blood stained sand. Both of Cooper’s cohorts stopped in their tracks and stared in horror at the scarred face of the kneeling bounty hunter.

The flickering light from untold numbers of lanterns cast their eerie illumination across his hideous features as Iron Eyes glared at the other two hired killers. He was like a ravenous wolf suddenly faced by innocent lambs.

Even the Devil himself could not have appeared more terrifying to Lane and Wood as they stared in disbelief at the creature bent over Cooper’s corpse.
