Billy turned the car off with a grin. “Admit it, Ransom. You’re getting used to riding in a ‘cage’.”
She laughed at his ferocious glower. “Dang, is it that hard to acknowledge that you like it?”
Ransom jerked his thumb toward the backseat. “Don’t get any fucking ideas on domesticating me, wildthing. You know good and well I couldn’t bring my work on my bike.”
“If you say soooo,” she sing-songed. Billy unbuckled her seatbelt and reached for the door handle. “You ready to do this?”
He coolly surveyed the front of the art gallery with masked indifference. Internally, it was a different story. Ransom’s nerves felt as if they were being consumed by termites and his gut was churning anxiously. As an MC enforcer, he could handle worst-case scenarios calmly and methodically. Give him a target to eliminate and he did what needed to be done without blinking. But aside from at school, there were only a handful of people he’d ever shared his work with anyone.
“It’s understandable if you’re nervous.” Billy pushed the wayward strands of Ransom’s hair that obscured his profile from her. “But you shouldn’t be because your work speaks for itself. I get it, though. I’m a straight mess before every production.”
Ransom gave her a curious look. “Am I that obvious?”
Billy snorted. “Hell no. I just know you.”
“What do you do to stop it? I‘m at a disadvantage here. I don’t know the ins and outs of any of this, and it’s fucking with me heavily. My stomach feels like it’s on a damn roller coaster,” he confessed tersely.
Billy was speechless. She’d never seen Ransom flustered, and her heart went out to him.
“First, you need to acknowledge that the feeling can’t be stopped. It’s an intricate part of the creative process. When you’re passionate and dedicated to your craft, you give it your all, heart and soul. You’re sensitive because it’s your baby. So, with that in mind, I take a deep breath and let go, knowing I did my best.” Billy smiled encouragingly. “Mom had her own advice for me. Want to hear it?”
Ransom chuckled. “Shit yeah! Every little bit helps, right?”
“I like to think so.”
“Do your best! Fuck the critics, baby! No one can do what you do, like you do it! The right audience will always find you.”
Her responses centered Ransom, and some of the jitters disappeared. He grabbed the door handle and smiled grimly. “Guess it’s do or die now.”
Billy grabbed his arm. “Stop sounding like this is going to be catastrophic! It’s a starting point, babe. We go in and see what they think. That’s all this is. Nothing is contractual unless you want it to be. Remember that, Ransom. Sometimes you just need a little bit of vision to see the infinite possibilities. Now, put your game face on.”
