I was slightly relieved to know that I didn’t cause all this by overwinding the Hoffhalder, or that I’d even overwound it at all. It was just a giant coincidence. Now that I had a few more answers, I needed to find a solution. My new friend the Tick Tock Man appeared to be coming up a little short in that department.

Albert resumed work at his station and seemed fully focused on ignoring me. I understood that the villagers had to solve their own problems, and it was up to me to pass on that information. Such fun.

The isochronal circle started spinning again, and I watched as the familiar image of Ratchet appeared in the middle of it. He was tied to a large gear, bound at both his feet and hands. As the gear turned, Ratchet turned with it. He smiled then swore loudly at the two members of the Verge who were guarding him. Albert wanted me to know Ratchet was still alive, and I was thankful for that. I had a feeling I would get a chance to help him very soon.

Without turning around, Albert summoned the circle to stop, and the clocks fell gently to the floor. The image of Ratchet faded away.

“Thanks, Albert.” I walked toward the door.

He grunted something; then all the clocks flew up off the floor and went back to their original spots. The clock parts found their drawers and bins, and everything was returned to normal. I reached for the doorknob and twisted it, causing the entire door to shake from the squeak of the springs. As I looked back, the clocks in the room began to disappear, and soon it was as empty as the moment I entered it.

Except for Albert. He wheeled toward the door on the left with smooth strokes. The door opened, but instead of going through it, he gave me one last look. “The clocks have all stopped, and soon everyone in our town will notice. Your friends in Furtwangen can only fool them for so long.”

“So what happens if the clocks don’t get running again?”

“You don’t want to know.” Albert pushed his wheelchair toward the door, but I ran over and stopped him.

“Actually, I do.” He tried his best to wheel away, but I held firm. “Please, Albert. I’ve come this far.”

“Fine. Please release me.” I took a step back, trusting that he would give me an answer. “The town clocks form the world’s largest isochronal circle. You’ve seen the power of such a circle on a small scale, so just imagine the power of one the size of this town. We’ll all be sent back a hundred years, give or take. If we survive it.”

He wheeled through the door shaking his head the entire time. The room was now completely empty.

I didn’t feel like going back up the creepy elevator or seeing creepy Adele in the shop, so I opened the small door that I hoped led outside. Sunlight began to peek in as it opened into the back alley.
