Chapter 4 Renna

When her mother and father called her in to the throne room, she had already packed and was ready to go. Her mother and father laughed at her enthusiasm and they hugged and kissed her and wished her luck. Renna set off on her quest with such excitement that she would have had a difficult time not skipping the entire way had she not been on a horse. As she traveled, she enjoyed the beautiful trees and flowers and committed them to memory so that she could paint them later. The thought of what she would have to do to pass her challenges never crossed her mind. Her imagination was overflowing with fantasies of her future husband and life. She saw Adela in the clearing and got off her horse to run and meet her, but the Wood Faerie’s guards grabbed her and locked her in the dungeon without speaking a single word to her. It took Renna a few minutes to realize what had happened.

When she did come to her senses, she began to yell and bang on the door. She had never imagined that the challenges would include torture.

The dungeon was dark and cold and it smelled ghastly. The only light was emanating from two small lanterns on the wall. It smelled like mold and Renna was certain that there was a dead mouse somewhere. Renna could not think of a worse place she could be. She sat and cried until she had no tears left. This was so unfair! Her sisters had gotten to pick husbands and she had gotten thrown into a dungeon.

When Renna's tears were gone, she sulked, pouted, and fumed about the unjust circumstances. She finally fell asleep. When she woke, she had come to peace with her situation and decided to make the best of it. She explored the dank room and found a small dark bag. It looked like someone had discarded leftover fabrics, ribbons, and paints. Renna couldn't believe her luck! She might be locked in a dungeon, but at least it didn't have to be ugly! She set to work decorating. It only took her a few hours to transform the hideous dungeon into an area where she didn't mind being at all!

A small flap at the bottom of the large steel door opened and food was pushed through. Renna had been so caught up in her devastation and then decorating that she had not realized how hungry she was. The food was nothing like anything that would ever be served in the castle, but it was certainly edible. There was a small apple, a hard roll (void of the butter and jam she would have usually topped it with) a piece of smoked fish and a small piece of cheese. She was given only water to drink, but at least it was clean and cold. She relished each bite. After she ate, she gathered the paints and brushes that were in the bag and decided to spend her time painting.
