Sitting at the oval table, we were sure that we’d just been fucked up the ass with no lube.

Every single one of our lieutenants was on a 24-hour hold. Malcolm, Sharp, Abigail, Hype, Dame, Jeremy, Miguel, Caesar, Tavi, Quinten, and Christopher. They were all being interviewed.

“It’s not a coincidence that these officials tagged us at one time. It’s also not a coincidence that they picked them all up at the same time.” Deer folded his hands in front of his face, trying to figure out the pattern. That’s how he functioned.

“No, not at all.” Turner was busy on his computer trying to find out things that only he understood. “They never touched Saving Grace or the hospital. There is nothing illegal happening in those two places, and they know it, but how?”

“Does anybody have any leads?” Domino stroked his temples, and I knew he was trying to make sense of things.

We didn’t think any of our people would talk, but you never knew. The right amount of pressure was enough to make people do whatever you needed them to do. Everybody remained quiet.

Domino had about seven phones spread out in front of him. Each with a different purpose. The one in the middle lit up, catching most of our attention. Turner was unmoving about what he was doing. Lots of typing, clicking, and eye movement on the screen. He focused on the ones and zeros while we did on the tangible things.

“He’s on the case,” Domino confirmed. Another phone lit up. “We have eyes on the inside, too.”

Finally, some good news. I stood up and exited the room. Pulling out my phone designated only for family, I called Stacey. I knew I embedded the number as a secret contact. Hopefully, she’d answer.

“Hello!” She sounded out of breath.

“Are you okay?” I asked, unsure if she was safe.

“Yes. I was doing laundry and had to sprint to the phone.” She sighed. “Ms. Womack won’t have a thing to do when she comes here. I’ve had to keep myself busy with cleaning. I’ve cooked, too. Am I a crazy person?” She giggled.

Relaxing, I smiled. “Not at all, Lacey. You’re just keeping busy.”

“Ya Amar, I miss you. You’re safe, yes?”

“I am. Are you?”

“Mhm… I was thinking about our goodbye. You’re… creative.” She giggled.

“You’re… mine.” I pulled my lip into my mouth with my teeth. “All mine, Lacey.”

“I am. I know you can’t tell me anything, but please don’t stay away too long. Be safe. Miss me, too.”

How could I not? “Sweetness, it’s impossible not to. Be good for me.”

“Always.”

“I’ll talk to you when I can.”

“Yes. Goodnight, Ya Amar.”

“Goodnight, Lacey.”

I moved into the living room, where Yasmine was watching TV. “Can I ask you a question?”

She nodded. “Go ahead.”

“What’s…” I paused to get it right, “Ya Amar?”

“My moon. It’s someone you have an emotional relationship with. A tie.” Yasmine smiled. “Are you and my sister having an emotional relationship?”

Should I tell her? “We’re trying to see if a relationship is possible.”

Yasmine’s smile only grew. “I wish you well.
