Westmore slumped further. Great. Have another drink, Westmore.
âYou donât believe me?â The cigarette tip brightened momentarily, then more smoke floated. âHow else would I know those things? Remember the guy you wanted to kill in the Army, behind the Bravo Company barracks? He called you a pussy, so you fought him. You wanted to kill him, Westmore. And you were gonna kill him, too, werenât you? Remember?â
Westmore felt sick. He did remember.
âBut you didnât do it. Why didnât you?â
Westmore stared as much at the shadow as he did into the past. âI changed my mind.â
âWrong. Wanna know why you didnât?â
âWhy?â
âBecause of me. I was the whisper in your ear. I was your good judgment.â
âReally?â Westmore chuckled under his breath. Iâm hallucinating, fine. I understand now. I can understand that. Yet he challenged the mirage. âWhy would you do that? Why would you whisper that in my ear?â
âBecause you donât need murder on your track-record of sin. Youâre in deep enough shit already, I can tell you that, asshole.â
âGreat language for an angel,â the photographer retorted.
âHey, God doesnât give a shit about that. Itâs all about whatâs hereââthe angel touched his headââand hereââthe angel touched his heartââand how you use that out there.â The angel pointed to the window.
Another drag on the cigarette. Westmore squinted more details; his eyes were acclimating. The âangelâ wore dark jeans and a black t-shirt that read, in white block letters: ZZLSEN. He had long straight hair, like someone in a metal band, a handsome, rugged face.
âYouâre not an angel, youâre just some fuckinâ guy.â
The figure nodded, and then sipped Westmoreâs scotch.
âAnd, besides,â the photographer added, âangels donât drink scotch or smoke Marlboros.â
âWhy not? I indulge every hundred years or soâI think Iâve earned it.â
âBut I thought the body is a temple of the lord.â
âIt is, assholeâto you. But Iâm immune. Iâm a higher being.â Another sip, and he put the glass down. âJohnny Blueâs no big deal. Next one, pour some Macallan.â The angel took a step closer, face out of the moonlight. âListen, and listen good. This is how we do things. You donât understand, but listen anyway. Iâm from an offshoot order of the SeraphimâIâm called a Caliginaut. Angels from my order willingly descend from the rapture. Weâre, like, Godâs recon crew, his commandos. We condition ourselves to darkness. Weâreâ¦special angels.â
âWhere are your wings? Angels have wings.â
âWe cut them off ourselves, by the decree of our order. Itâs a sacrifice, Westmore. We have to do it ourselves, itâs gnarly.â The angel stepped closer to the French doors, turned, and peeled his t-shirt up. âMy attentor joints. See?â
Westmore saw, almost wincing. Two flesh-covered stumps protruded from a y-shaped ridge on his back. âYou amputate your own wings is what youâre telling me?â
âYeah. We use a tool called a Skttaz, like a giant pair of bolt cutters, man. Itâs hardcore.â
Westmore felt winded; he dabbed at the gash on his head with a handkerchief. He pushed past the pain, though, and played along with the illusion.
