CHAPTER SIX

TALIE slept through her facial and manicure, and still had time for an hour with a cucumber compress over her eyes before the telephone rang to wake her with the alarm call she’d booked.

She replaced the receiver, then lay back against the pillow, a hand over her stomach to quiet the little thrill of anticipation that fluttered through her. Buffed, polished, and with the most expensive dress she’d ever possessed hanging in the wardrobe, she had long forgotten her irritation at having to forgo an evening sightseeing.

She didn’t even care that Jude hadn’t thought it necessary to ask, rather than command.

She was excited, she realised. And just a bit nervous. The way she’d used to feel before going out on a big date. She could just about remember how that felt. Not that she’d ever been out on a date with a man like Jude Radcliffe.

She wasn’t now, she reminded herself, firmly rejecting all thoughts of the way he’d held her hand when she was gibbering unattractively with nervousness as their flight left the ground, the touch of his fingers against her cheek as he’d tucked a stray curl behind her ear.

It wasn’t personal. Her hair annoyed him, that was all. Hell, it annoyed her…

This was just a work thing. Obviously Jude needed someone along to take care of his speech, hand it to him at the appropriate moment…

No. That wasn’t it. He was more than capable of taking care of his own speech. She couldn’t think why he needed her with him, but being seen in the company of one of the world’s most powerful businessmen was undoubtedly going to be the highlight of her year.

Probably her entire decade, the way things were going.

What it was going to be for him, she wasn’t sure, but he undoubtedly had some good reason for wanting her there, and she doubted that it had anything to do with ‘entertainment.’

If it was, he was going to be disappointed. She was going to be his Girl Friday. Supportive, discreet, doing absolutely nothing to draw attention to herself. Doing absolutely nothing that would give his eyebrow an excuse to get excited.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime Cinderella moment, and she wasn’t going to do a thing to wreck it. She was going to be the perfect young businesswoman. Make him eat his ‘entertainment’ if it killed her.

She glanced at her watch. Plenty of time. And she smiled as she imagined his face as she walked into the room. Stunned by the elegant and understated perfection of her dress. Bowled over by her sleek new hairstyle.

‘Talie…’ He’d murmur her name on little more than a breath as he reached for her hand, whispered her name again, as if he could hardly believe his eyes as he bent to kiss her cheek and she caught the subtle scent of an Alpha male for once lost for words.

‘Talie, you look…’

‘Talie!’

She sat up with a start.

‘Talie, are you ready?’

What? Ready? She looked at her watch.

Oh, sugar… She’d gone straight back to sleep.
