Chapter Twenty-One

ELLA

"Oh my God," Ella mumbled again.

She couldn't move. She stood in the doorway, frozen and mortified. But her gaze had no shame.

Before Ella could tell her own eyes to shove it, they roamed over Axton's body. He was, without a doubt, perfect.

Legs with lean, corded muscles. Abs so perfect, they even had that V cut on the sides. Ella didn't know what it was called—she barely remembered her own name right now. Strong arms covered by glorious tattoos with thick, intertwining lines, snaking up the side of his neck and down his ribs.

Desire shot through Ella. It almost vibrated inside, beckoning for a closer look. A closer touch.

Her gaze traveled up his torso, which bore scars from his missions, now faded into his pale skin. Up and up her hungry eyes went, past his clavicle, neck, delectable lips and—

Ella snapped out of her haze when she met his amused eyes. Good Lord, she'd been ogling him.

She whirled around, face hot, knees a bit wobbly. "I'm so sorry. I should have waited for you to say come in or stay out or—"

"It's okay." Axton laughed, mercifully putting on some clothes, from the sound of rustling fabric. "You're always welcomed in my room."

Lord, have mercy on her, because that sounded like an invitation she so wanted to accept.

"Still, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have barged in and—"

The words died on her lips as Axton sauntered into view and leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, no care in the world.

He hadn't put on clothes. Not really. He'd put on a pair of pants that barely clung to his hips. Nothing on top. Nothing to keep the sight of his glorious chest from her. He was mean.

Ella gulped, struggling to remember why she'd barged in. The very important Treaty, right. But her mouth was suddenly dry, her face and chest were heating up fast, and the words wouldn't come out.

"I was actually planning on coming to talk to you," he said casually.

"Oh?"

"I wanted to tell you I'm going to leave for a couple of days. Need to see a friend."

"What friend?" Ella asked tersely. Okay, Caputo, where had that come from?

A lazy, satisfied smile pulled at Axton's lips. “A very good friend of mine.”

“One of your adult friends who likes those fucking chains of yours?” Their marriage contract might’ve included a no-cheating clause, but they wouldn’t be married for months, would they? Ella hadn’t started planning the wedding. He hadn’t bought a ring. If they wanted to mess around, this was their last chance. But Ella didn’t want that. She wanted him, only him, and she thought he felt the same way.

She was very close to breaking something in his room. Something old and expensive; he loved those.

“This friend is an adult,” he said slowly, obviously enjoying every second. “And I hear they’re really into chains.”

“Oh?” Two could play this game. “Then maybe I should find friends like that. Broaden my horizons.”

The smile dropped from Axton’s face as his eyes narrowed. “Not funny.”

“Really? I think it’s fucking hilarious.
