8.2.1.1.2 Aggressive Backoff

Analogous to the backpressure approaches discussed earlier, a switch or other device can modify the characteristics of the Ethernet backoff algorithm to obtain an unfair advantage and to empty its output queue faster. A standard Ethernet controller, when faced with collisions, will select a rescheduling interval (backoff time) using the truncated binary exponential backoff algorithm. With this method, the backoff time for any retransmission attempt is a random variable with an exponentially-increasing range for repeated transmission attempts.
