Body-Centered Types
There are commonalities between each Enneagram type that share a broader center of intelligence. Those in the body center process experiences internally and are thought to have anger just below the surface, which affects the way they work with the world.
Type 1, Reformer
Type 1s see the world in terms of black and white, right and wrong. They constantly strive to do the right thing in the right way. The one right way. No shortcuts. No partial methods. They see a world full of errors and mistakes and feel obligated to correct them all. They are afraid of messing things up by doing something imperfectly. So, they are constantly criticizing their own work. Although most of us have an inner critic that plagues our self-talk, the ferocity and loudness of the inner critic of type 1 makes the rest seem like purring kittens in comparison. Reformers tend to have anger lurking just below the surface, so these dutiful people often become resentful of those around them. They resent that people donât seem to care about doing things right and seem ruffled when they helpfully point out where others could improve. Given the strong moral compass of 1s, they are often strong advocates for social justice.
If youâre a leader who is a 1, your desire to make the world a better place is immensely helpful. And it can become a hindrance. Sometimes there really is more than one ârightâ way to get things done. And sometimes âgood enoughâ really is good enough. Donât let your strong sense of right and wrong cloud your perceptions. Learn to be open to how your team gets things done, even if itâs not exactly the way you would do it. Because, if weâre being honest, once youâve done it the way youâd do it, youâll find a problem with that too. So, learn to give their way a chance.
