CHAPTER 28

Seven hours after the FBI agents and their forensics team arrived at Teri Arceneaux’s home, they began sending field reports by e-mail to Special Agent Dean Salerno at the Child Abduction Serial Murder Investigative Resources Center in Langley, Virginia. The state-of-the-art technology on which the FBI spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars would have made J. Edgar Hoover proud.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s office personnel were relegated to being spectators, as the FBI controlled the case, but the agents were sensitive to their feelings, asking them to set up perimeters and asking Sargent Deveraux and the two other officers to stay around to be debriefed. The cops were happy. They would be clocking in for much needed overtime, which normally they wouldn’t have.

Salerno already disseminated some of the reports to his key agents, including Cis Burns. The bullpen was humming with activity. Salerno called for a staff meeting at 8 p.m.

“Cis, your job will be to get GG up to our bullpen. Don’t take any shit. We need her. She’s going to be kicking and screaming,” Salerno warned.

“I’ll offer to walk her up the stairs, and I’ll run to CVS to get some nicotine gum and a vape. That should keep her calm for a bit,” Burns blurted.

“I noticed something in our last meeting with GG,” Salerno fished.

“What was that?”

“I think she likes you.”

“What can I say? I’m a likeable kind of gal,” Cis laughed.

“I mean like like.”

Cis paused to take in the comment.

“Like? Like…Like?”

“Yup. She has a different look when you are around, and I can see she’s trying to impress you.”

“And the new look? You think that’s for me?” Cis asked.

“Pretty sure, Cis. She looks at you even when she’s talking to me,” Salerno said.

“Please put my transfer in to Fairbanks, Alaska, or Bangor, Maine,” Cis kidded.

“We can get a hell of a lot out of that genius mess if you can tolerate it.”

“I sure can, boss. My job is to help the team find this maniac. I’ll do what I have to do…within limits of course.”
