• systematic spot emergence between -30 and 30 degrees latitude, within the ‘wings of the butterfly’ (Figure 18);
• leading and following spots are of opposite signs in each hemisphere (Hale’s polarity law);
• steady motion of diffuse magnetic fields from spots towards the poles, over a year or so;
• ‘cancellation’, or reversal of sign of pre-existing polar fields, following the poleward motion of follower sunspots emerging systematically closer to the poles (‘Joy’s law’);
• after eleven years, the entire pattern is repeated with polarities now all reversed.
