CHAPTER 48

FIRST DAY BACK IN Consorting and it’s the same ol’ same ol’ for Henry Loch. Him and Lowell are back where they started, like a traumatic flashback. Back in the car. Henry cruising and fuming. Lowell riding shotgun, nursing a 3 pm beer.

‘It’s a bloody hot one,’ Lowell says. ‘Where are we going, anyway?’

‘I want to check on a house,’ says Henry.

‘You’re the boss.’

It’s a busy afternoon on Carlisle Avenue, Mermaid Beach. The last of the summer tourists are on the street, trundling along, towels around their necks, crying toddlers in tow. Henry double-parks, waits, eyes fixed on Maddy’s house, watching it shimmer in the heat.

Lowell necks his beer and burps. ‘What’s the job here?’

Henry ignores him.

Lowell reclines his seat and closes his eyes.

The car in front pulls out and Henry nudges into the park. He kills the ignition.

It takes an hour, but when she finally appears, it’s worth it. Maddy Santos wears a white swimsuit and holds a long glass in her hand. For minutes, she stays at the window, scanning the street.

Lowell comes awake. He squints through the windshield, still half-dazed from the nap. ‘Nice,’ he says.

‘I think she’s involved in the Brian Amstell case.’

‘Is that your excuse?’

‘Piss off.’

‘Maybe she’s the killer,’ says Lowell, putting his head back down.

Across the street, Maddy Santos pulls the blinds.

‘She’s done something,’ says Henry.
