‘Eh, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but what are we doing here?’ Dan asked me, glancing around at the crowded bar. It wasn’t exactly the obvious place for a life coaching session, but then, I had the feeling nothing about tonight was going to be predictable.

‘Don’t do it, Jess,’ I’d blurted, when she’d told me her plan on the phone earlier.

‘Why?’

I admit that panic and my location at that moment influenced my response. ‘Because, because… because Lulu will have a hit out on you by the end of the day, and I’d miss you. I already visit too many people I love at the cemetery.’

‘I’m going to ignore that you just said that,’ she’d retorted, in the kind of tone that you used with a child when you were indulging their tall tales. ‘Do you have an intelligent, logical reason that I shouldn’t do it?’

That gave me time to think. ‘Because he’s in a mess and he’s confused. He needs to get over Lu before he even thinks about seeing anyone else.’

‘We’ve covered this already. What if he’s so blinded by the thought that he’ll never love again that he takes Lu back? Devil. Deep blue sea. At least with me he’ll be swimming in waters that don’t have sharks.’

I’m not sure if it was the corny line or the cold that made me shiver. ‘Did you spend all day thinking that line up?’

A throaty laugh came down the line. ‘Sure did. Too much?’

If Annie was listening in on this she’d be floating on a celestial cloud. This was the kind of gossip she’d lived for. ‘Definitely. But I see your point about the timing. You know what? You do whatever you feel is right. What the hell do I know? I’m an emotionally stunted widow who couldn’t build a healthy relationship with the plant in my kitchen.’

A few minutes later the text came in to our ‘Life Coaching by Jess’ WhatsApp group. I wanted to change the name of the group to Sad Gits by Jess, but I wasn’t brave enough.

Hey chaps, change of plan for tonight. Let’s get out and about. Meet in Graca House at 8 p.m.
