Another cloaking technique that could allow invisibility cloaking of an object in free-space was theorized in 2005 by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Rome [48]. This method considered an isotropic material object, covered by a thin isotropic material layer having low or negative permittivity or permeability, to significantly reduce the scattering cross-section of the object. Since the cloaking material is close to its plasma resonance, this method is called plasmonic cloaking . The inner object (core) had permittivity ε and permeability μ with radius a, and the outer layer (cover) had permittivity ε c and permeability μc with radius a c . The objects analyzed were either spherical or cylindrical in shape, and the plasmonic metamaterial cover layer was in a free-space environment. By proper choice of these parameters, the scattering cross-section could be reduced to render the object almost invisible to a viewer. Figure 7.29 illustrates a design for a cylindrical geometry with a TE wave input, where the conditions for minimum cross-section scattering are given by
