THINK ON YOUR OWN

Why might elevators go out of service on windy days?

This ball, which is inside a building in Taiwan, is the world’s largest and heaviest damper.

To stop skyscrapers from swaying, engineers use dampers. Some dampers are huge metal balls that hang inside the top floors. When the skyscraper sways in the wind, the metal ball swings the other way. Other dampers are tanks of water that are larger than a swimming pool. When the skyscraper sways, the water moves the other way. The movement of the damper helps stabilize the skyscraper.
