“I can’t wait any longer,” Craig begins. He, Phoebe, Brad, and I are sitting in a little Las Vegas diner called the Salt Shaker, which Craig and Brad discovered a few years ago when they were starting out. According to the guys, they serve a great breakfast, especially for the money. They were right. We’ve finished stuffing ourselves full of eggs and hashed browns at prices even I can afford.

Breakfast has been a welcome break from monitoring the Village Voice website to determine if the Johnny-cocaine-Today show story will break. It doesn’t. Sasha’s veiled threats must have done their job. As disgusted as I am, I’m also feeling relieved I don’t have to endure any more of her slimy tactics to make this thing go away. I’m not able to focus on this further because, out of nowhere, Craig drops the mother of all bombshells.

“What do you say about getting married?” Craig says to Phoebe. I look over at Brad and he’s staring at Phoebe with a huge grin on his face. He doesn’t look surprised, so he must have known about this.

“What?” she exclaims. “Are you serious?”

“Yeah, I am.” Craig pulls out a red jewelry box labeled with an obscenely expensive designer name and opens it up to show an impressive diamond ring. It’s a simple setting with one large, round stone in the middle and two smaller round stones flanking each side. Despite its size—which is huge, by the way—it’s unpretentious and exactly Phoebe’s style.

“Yes,” she says, tears streaming down her face. “Yes, I will marry you,” she repeats before flinging her arms around Craig’s neck and kissing him all over his face. She pulls back and looks embarrassed by her reaction, but there’s no need for apologies. Her response is what it should be when you’re absolutely in love with someone.

“I’m so happy for you,” I say to her, with tears welling in my own eyes. I give her a warm hug and get up and go around the other side of the booth to give Craig a hug too.

“So, do you want to get married here?” she asks, lifting her shoulder up.

“You want to get married here? In Las Vegas?” he asks with skepticism.

“Well, we’re here and B.O. is here and I’m sure Marin would be happy to be a witness, or my maid of honor,” she says, looking at me.

“It would be my honor,” I tell her.

“I thought you would want to wait until we finished the tour so we could have something big back home,” Craig responds.

“I don’t need anything big. Only you.”

“God, I love you.” He puts his hands on her face and kisses her silly. It’s raw and real and so absolutely lovely.

“I love you too.” She laughs and kisses him back. “So what do you say? Ready to get married?”

“Right now?” he asks with a laugh.

“Yeah, today,” she says smiling.

“Hell yeah, I’m ready.”

Brad gets out his cell phone and starts tapping on the screen. “Do you guys want a regular priest or justice of the peace or an Elvis?” Brad asks them.
