Many average golfers struggle to play at a decent level for two reasons: (1) bad information and (2) misinterpretation of information. Go to any golf course or driving range and you’ll hear all kinds of clichés used to explain bad shots. Things like “I got quick” or “I didn’t release it” or “I lost my balance.” Some explanations like these are just plain wrong, while others may identify a problem, but the solution chosen does not address the real issue.

An example of bad information is the weight shift. Players have long been told to shift to the right foot on the backswing so they can drive into the ball on the downswing. But the shift-right model is too unpredictable, especially when practiced by inexperienced players. Plus, as the historical photos in this book show, some of the best and most powerful golfers the game has known never shifted off the ball in the backswing. They might think they did, they might feel like they did, but the pictures prove they did not. The notion that power comes from loading onto the right side is false, and yet it is commonly taught today.
