Fig 5.1. Diagram to show time dilation between two objects moving at relatively different speeds

The horizontal axis, path 1, represents an object with lower kinetic energy than an object on path 2. Both objects are moving at the speed of light in their own reference frames however the path 2 object appears to be moving relatively faster because its time is running slower. Both masses start from point x on the diagram with the mass on path 1 moving from x to p. Point p on the horizontal axis is 299,792,458 meters or 1 second from point x. The dotted line represents I second from point x in all frames of reference. The triangle formed by points x, z and p is the part of the diagram we are interested in. The line from z to p forms a right angle with path 2 or can be considered to be parallel to a tangent at point y. On the diagram I have marked the sides of the triangle as a, c and v, using these labels and Pythagoras we can work out the following equation.
