Chapter 17

Mirrick entered the secret room and held his lantern aloft. The room itself was very plain, with whitewashed walls and a rough stone floor. Opposite the door was a wooden cupboard painted with gold designs and mystic runes. A fearsome carved dragon surmounted the top.

“What an amazing creation. It must have been made to hold something really important,” said Espiriton.

“Let's hope so,” said Sister Sethselina.

Two exquisitely carved handles in the shape of dragons adorned the front. Mirrick carefully opened the cupboard to discover that inside was something wrapped in an old cloth. Mirrick peeled back the cloth with great care. The book inside looked very ordinary, the size that would fit into a large pocket. Mirrick blew away the dust to reveal a faded green cover.

“Is that it?” said Windwise. “That little thing?”

“Let's hope it contains a big secret,” replied Espiriton.

“I suggest we take it back to your quarters to study it,” said Sethselina.

Mirrick clutched the book to his chest as they left the room, and the door closed silently behind them, as did the outer door. Espiriton closed the trapdoor as they reached the passageway, and replaced the small tile covering the ring handle. They walked silently back to their quarters.

Mirrick placed the book on a table and they all gathered round. The cover was very old in faded green leather, and in the centre was an intricately carved silver mount with a hole in the middle.

“It looks as if there used to be a jewel of some kind set here,” said Mirrick. “Let’s take a look inside.” He opened the book. The pages looked brand new, as if written yesterday, and the words showed clean and bright.

“Are you sure this is what we are looking for?” asked Windwise.

“Yes, yes,” said Mirrick. “There is so much magic in this book that it has kept the pages from deteriorating. The script is very old. This will take time.” He traced his finger along the first line. “It says that this was created by the Sorcerians themselves.” He sighed.

“I think we could do with some herbal tea,” said Sethselina, and she left to organise it.

Windwise looked at the book. “I don't think I will be much help. Call me if you need me.” He then flew into the garden to sleep.

Espiriton and Mirrick sat studying the book, and shortly Sethselina brought in the tea and joined the wizards. They sat in silence sipping their tea.

“If we can find the Orickar and destroy it, what happens to the book afterwards?” said Sethselina.

“I'm not sure,” said Mirrick. “We may have to destroy the book too. Perhaps others will come looking for it, and the Sisters may be in danger if it fell into the wrong hands....”

Paper and ink had been brought and Mirrick made notes as he deciphered the text. Sethselina fell asleep in a chair, while Espiriton paced around the room, until he found himself on the terrace outside the window. The glow stone moon shone down on the trees as he sat on the terrace wall.
