BENEATH THE COVER OF darkness, we take three motorcycles from the garage and head for the bookstore. We could run at vampire speed for part of the way, but we can’t maintain high levels of speed for long before we get tired and need to rest.

With the bikes, we can go at a steady speed and if anyone does happen to see us, they’ll think we’re humans. It’s a lot easier to explain going on a midnight motorcycle ride than a midnight jog at high speeds that aren’t possible for humans to achieve.

We’re silent until we reach Possum Grove. We won’t be able to stay long because it was a three-hour journey. By the time we get back, the sun will be coming up, and we’re going to be pushing our limits as it is.

“Where’s the bookstore?” Liam asks, pulling up between me and Paul. We’re all at a stoplight at the edge of town.

“It should be around here,” I glance around. There are a couple of houses and several stores on this main road. I can’t imagine that it’s going to take us very long.

We head forward, passing a little general store and a post office. There’s a library here, as well as a few floral shops. How many flower shops does one little town need?

Eventually, we round a corner and pass some houses, and then I spot a little grove of trees. Across from it, there’s an empty area where the ground is charred and there’s a huge pile of rubble.

We’ve found it.

The three of us stop our bikes in front of the former bookstore, but we don’t move to climb off of them. I don’t need to get off my motorcycle to know that this is the place. This is where Heath sat and wrote that book.

This is where it all happened.

“All of this time,” I whisper, “and he never went far.”

“He’s probably been trying to find you for a long time,” Liam says quietly.

“With the security we had while touring, he never had a chance at getting close to you,” Paul adds. I think that’s key here. Heath knew where I was most of the time because I was in the band, but once we went radio silent, he probably had a harder time finding me.

Possum Grove is just one town over from where our post office box is, which means he probably spends a lot of time there, too. I imagine him lurking, biding his time waiting to finally run into me in the wild.

He didn’t count on the fact that I’m basically a recluse at this point.

I glance over my shoulder at the little grove of trees. It looks like a place I used to love exploring when I was a little girl. Back then, I wasn’t allowed to have a lot of fun. My parents didn’t support the idea of me climbing trees or running outside. They wanted me to behave. They wanted me to be good.

All they really wanted was for me to fit in with their high society friends.
