The Barry Gray Show
WMCA Radio
Guest: Benny Lament
December 30, 1969
âIf youâre just joining us on WMCA, youâre listening to The Barry Gray Show. Iâm here with Benny Lament, and weâre talking music, murder, and one of the biggest stories of the decade, for a number of reasons.â
âEsther and I had the deck stacked against us, thatâs for sure,â Benny Lament says.
âThere are a lot of layers to your story, layers folks may not know about. It wasnât just the obvious challenges of love and color.â
âThe obvious is easier to deal with, because you can prepare. Itâs when you donât know whoâs a friend and whoâs a foe that things get complicated. When you donât know whoâs pulling for you and whoâs plotting against you.â
âWere you ever scared?â Barry Gray asks.
âI was. Always,â Benny Lament answers. âNot of the music. Not of the work. But I was afraid of the things I couldnât control.â
âWhy?â
âMy father told me once that men are put on earth to protect and provide. If a man canât protect and provide itâll make him mean . . . or itâll drive him crazy. I thought that was just an excuse until I loved someone so much that I would do anything to protect them. I understand now.â
âYou were worried you couldnât protect or provide?â
âIâm big. And Iâm ugly. But some battles are bigger than one man.â
âBigger than one man and one woman?â
âWay bigger. But Esther said something once that Iâve never forgotten.â
âWhatâs that?â
âShe said if you want people to change, you have to show them what it looks like.â
