Chapter 7
When Janet came down the stairs the next morning, Joan was standing in the middle of the kitchen with tears streaming down her face.
âAre you okay?â Janet asked, pulling her sister into a hug.
Joan stiffened in her arms. âI didnât hear you coming down,â she said. âIâm perfectly fine.â
Janet studied her sisterâs face. âYou arenât perfectly fine,â she argued.
âNo, but I will be. It was foolish of me to think that I could find, well, someone special at my age. I need to focus on Doveby House. We need to think seriously about the carriage house and how best to utilize that space.â
Janet frowned. âWhatâs going on with Michael?â she demanded.
âHow should I know? He hasnât rung me back yet,â Joan replied with a quaver in her voice.
âRing him again.â
âI canât do that.â
âThen Iâll ring him. We need to know whatâs happening on Monday night, if nothing else.â
âYou and I are having dinner at the café on Monday night,â Joan countered. âIf Michael doesnât ring me back, he may be surprised when we donât turn up at the French restaurant, but that will be his problem and not mine.â
Janet wanted to argue, but the Ellsworths , who chose that moment to walk into the kitchen, interrupted her.
âIs everything okay?â Paula asked, looking from one sister to the other.
âEverything is fine,â Joan replied. âI just have a slight headache this morning. I hope you donât mind if Janet prepares your breakfast for you?â
âOf course not,â Paula replied. âYou go and lie down.â
Janet was surprised that her sister had lied to their guests, but when she saw the look on her sisterâs face, she decided that Joan wasnât lying after all. âPaula is right,â she said quickly. âYou go and lie down. I can manage breakfast.â
âAre you certain?â Joan asked.
âOf course,â Janet replied with far more confidence than she felt. Sheâd never made breakfast for guests before and she knew how much Paula was looking forward to Joanâs cooking, but sheâd simply have to do her best.
Joan put up no more than a token protest before she retired to her room. As Janet heard the door shut behind her sister, she opened the refrigerator and pulled out eggs and bacon. âFull English?â she asked the couple.
âYes, please,â Peter replied.
Janet did her best, but getting everything timed just right wasnât as easy as Joan always made it appear. The Ellsworths were kind when they were given their breakfast plates with a few items missing. Janet supplied them as they finished cooking, though, and in the end, they did get a full English breakfast, just in several courses instead of all at once.
âIâm so sorry,â Janet said as she handed them toast at the very end.
Paula laughed. âPlease donât be sorry. Itâs perfectly fine. We got everything we were meant to get and it was all delicious.â
âI rather appreciated the entire experience,â Peter told her. âI was able to enjoy each thing separately, which made a nice change.â
âI just hope Joan is feeling better tomorrow,â Janet said.
