Figure 4-3. An ideal attack. Note carefully the direction of the ball. Upon receiving each pass, the O-team player places his back to the X-team player to shield the ball, being careful not to obstruct the opponent.
Any attack may not go ideally as planned because of defensive resistance, but the various methods of attack should be impressed upon the team. Controlled ball soccer is not a game where players run around haphazardly in order to score—it is a game utilizing continuous zigzag ground passing. Fig. 4-3 shows an ideal passing situation. The ball is only passed to an open teammate, that is, a teammate who has an opponent behind him. If a teammate has an opponent to his side, then the player with the ball should look for an unmarked teammate to make the pass to. These teammates should not be too difficult to locate in your own ⅔ of the field, unless the opponents are tightly marking your players. The following rules should be insisted upon when launching attacks or breaking up opposing attacks to regain possession of the ball.
Rule 1: The ball must be trapped stationary at the feet; when your team has the ball, the whole team is on the attack.
Rule 2: Short, no-risk ground passes are made in any direction in the following manner:
A. Keep the ball on the ground as much as possible.
B. Passes should be not less than 5' (1½ meters) nor more than 30' (9 meters) in the first ⅔ of the field (your defending portion of the field).
Note carefully the direction of the ball in the figure; each pass cannot be intercepted by an X-player because of shielding. Care must be used not to cause an obstruction. The goalkeeper should also be used.
