Behavior and change are to be evaluated in terms of context and ecology.

People are not their behaviors.(Accept the person; change the behavior.)

People have all the resources they need to succeed and to achieve their desired outcomes.(There are no unresourceful people, only unresourceful states.)

Expert-Level Thinking

Goggins’s cookie jar represents the idea that if something tough was accomplished in the past, something tough can be accomplished again in the future. All we have to do is acknowledge it.

Acknowledgment is the expression of appreciation, and many executives and cybersecurity leaders don’t know how to acknowledge the accomplishments of their technical staff. They misunderstand how difficult and how layered the cybersecurity industry is, so they misunderstand the skills of their cybersecurity team. Sometimes we get too caught up in the details or in the moment. Acknowledgment often requires us to zoom out of the moment and see how far we’ve come or what’s gone “right” rather than “wrong.” It’s an easy trap to look through the lens of what went wrong instead of what went right. There will always be things that did not go right. Bigger problems typically equal progress. If you continually run into the same problem, this is not progress.
