‘It means nothing.’

Kuznetsov smiled again and looked at Tikhon through hooded eyes.

‘No,’ he said, ‘I don’t suppose it does.’

He walked to the couch and sat, picking up a copy of Novoye Russkoye Slove and flicking through the newspaper.

‘Nothing worth reading,’ he said. ‘A few years ago, Yaponchik was tearing south Brooklyn apart. The cops were shitting themselves, money was flowing like piss in a gutter. Now? We have been neutered. The FBI convinced themselves – or the money men – that there was a Russian mafia in New York. The NYPD are getting a handle on the area. People in the neighborhood are beginning to suspect the police can make a difference – on a good day. The younger generation at least. Before, they wouldn’t go to a cop out of fear, of them as well as us.’ He shook his head.

Tikhon said nothing. He had nothing to say. This was irrelevant to him. All that mattered was killing his target in Brighton Beach – sooner or later. His personal mission. Then he would be done.

Clack. Clack.

He had a stabbing memory of the the mountains, the tracer fire, the screaming Afghan as Dolidze the Georgian fired into the man point blank. And the KGB officer in Afghan clothes, rucksack over his back. The pistol. Four shots into Dolidze’s face.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

He washed the memories out with the thought of Marina upstairs, like swilling mouthwash to kill a sour taste.

‘If you’re finished,’ he said and made for the stairs.

Kuznetsov chuckled and stood again. ‘Not one of my men would dare walk away from me. You are truly unique.’ He still held the newspaper and pointed with it at Tikhon. ‘I have some work for you. Tomorrow, I will meet a policeman. The cops contacted me and this man wants to ask me some questions. Not about me, about Volkov.’
