We were on the lake. Rebecca skated alongside me. I pulled the toboggan, fast, and in the back of the toboggan sat Samuel, wrapped up under a blanket.

He was smiling. Actually, really smiling.

Grinning from ear to ear.

Loving the speed. Loving the motion.

I pulled, faster and faster.

Then I changed direction suddenly, turning against my own momentum, and the toboggan swung out in a great wide circle behind me and I heard Samuel screaming, “Wheeeee!”

Rebecca took over and I skated behind them, and she pulled him faster even than I could pull him because she was older than me and bigger than me, and her muscles were stronger than mine because they had to be, because of everything she had to do, every day, just to stay alive.

Samuel spun and circled and flew on the ice until we were too tired to pull him any more, and we came in breathless to the island shore.

Rebecca lifted Samuel out of the toboggan and carried him back through the trees to the bivouac.

I went across the lake to get fries and ketchup from Abdul’s kiosk.
