“Any idea what that was all about?” Crease asked, as he watched them walk back to the lobby. “You know the Lambert kid?”

Morrison said nothing.

“What about the other guy? Howie?”

“Not so much. Runs the Greenacres plant, I think. His family…I do know.” She squinted as if she were figuring something out.

Crease left it at that. It was about all he was going to get out of the detective on the matter, he could see that.

Morrison’s cell rang. The ringtone was all business. “I’ve got to take this,” she said, moving away a few steps.

Crease stood his ground. He wanted to talk to Morrison about a number of things, and if he walked away now he’d lose her to the crowd.

“Can someone explain why they’ve got packs that look like they could take out half a block? I’d love to hear an explanation for that,” she said into her phone. Morrison did nothing to suppress her voice, or the anger it held. “I understand that, sir, but…”

A pause. Morrison walked in a circle and looked at the ceiling tiles.

“You want to take that risk? With McCartney? Are you kidding?”

Another pause. Morrison’s neck turned purple. She rubbed it.

“Who did that order come from? Jesus. What the hell do they want in Weaver?”

Morrison looked at Crease and rolled her eyes.

“We have an ETA? Okay and until then…right…but…McCartney…” She covered the mouthpiece and let out a long exhale. “Yes, sir.” She ended the call.

“Dickwad,” she said, tapping the keys on her cell. She held the phone back to her ear. “Jarett, you want to come down to the staff lounge? I need to tell you something.”

“I guess that call didn’t go quite how you wanted,” Crease said. It wasn’t a question. He already knew the answer.

A minute later, Detective Jarett reached them.

“What are those assholes doing now?” Morrison asked.

Jarett shook his head. “Doing what they do best. Being assholes.”

“Okay. Looks like we’re here as backup and support for McCartney and his circus.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means we get to do whatever he tells us to do.”

“Great.”

“I better go, it’s not…” Crease started.

“You stay with us,” Morrison said. “You know what we’re dealing with better than any of us, and a hell of a lot better than McCartney.”

“I’m not sure what I can do to help.”

“Neither am I,” Morrison replied, “but I feel a lot better having you around, Mr. Crease.”

“Just Crease.”

“So, we’re babysitting?” Jarett said. “All that training and we’re on crowd control.”

“For now,” Morrison said. “But we all know how McCartney operates and I guarantee you this, we’ll be pulling his ass out of the fire, probably literally, before the CDC arrive. The guys who actually know what they’re doing.”

“ETA?” Jarett asked.

Morrison shrugged. “They’re coming all the way from Atlanta. Weaver suddenly got important.”

“What the hell? Why not just send for the guys over in Benfield? They do squat most of the time anyway. They might enjoy a little trip over here.”

“Government’s twitchy,” Morrison said. “Have been since Dead Crow. They don’t want another one of those on their hands.
