CHAPTER 12
Boone and I spend the evening cooking dinner together. He brings me a bouquet of flowers, and we make meatballs and spaghetti and a red sauce using a recipe his mother swears by.
He kisses me on the cheek, and Olive and Ruthie giggle, watching us. Boone is just that kind of man, a man who makes everyone feel better just by being in his presence. The girls help by making the Caesar salad, and we slice the garlic bread once it's warmed.
Sitting at the dinner table, Bethany and Abel keep looking at one another with lovey-dovey eyes, and I feel my jaw tensing every time their knuckles brush. I know I need to get over it, but it's hard. Boone and I keep sharing glances, and it's as if his eyes are warning me to stay calm and collected. "Let them be kids," he's saying silently. And I'm reminding myself that it's not my job to intervene right now. We're having a nice family dinner. That's what's important.
"So," Abel says, "tonight, Bethany and I want to come to this Decipher thing. We want to help you, Mom."
"Absolutely not," I say without hesitation. "That's not happening. I'm going by myself."
Boone frowns. "No, you're not," he says. "I want to come. Anyway, you should not be going alone to downtown Tacoma at night."
"Well, you can't go," I say. "People can tell you're a cop from a mile away. That's not going to happen. You'll spook Esther out. She's wanted for murder, Boone. "
He frowns, conflicted. I know he's torn right now, thinking he should just call all of this in, but also wanting me to have my chance, first, to find my little girl, to speak with her before the police are involved.
"Bethany,â I say, âif your mom knew where you were going at midnight, you're not going to be able to come back here. She's still deeply immersed in the Garden Temple philosophy, and if you're at a punk concert at midnight, she'd be livid."
"She doesn't have to know," Bethany says.
"If you want to risk it, that's on you," I say, "but if something happens and she does find out and it changes your ability to come visit Abel, then that's yours and Abel's decision. I've just told you what I think."
She exhales, setting down her fork. "I didn't think of it like that," she says. "Well, I don't want to do anything to jeopardize coming back up here. I wanted to come this summer when school gets out," she says. "Abel, remember we made plans?"
I bite my tongue. Of course I want to know what plans they've made, but I refuse to ask.
"Well, I can still go," Abel says. "You can't go by yourself, Mom."
Boone nods. "That makes sense, actually. Abel, you go with your mother, so she's not alone, and I'll stay here with the girls. I don't really think I should know much about what you're planning tonight anyway: the less I know, the better.
I smile, having the plan settled.
