Notes and Afterthoughts

Many U.S. Army soldiers lives were probably saved by Berndt’s alertness and farsightedness by bringing along the short handle shovel into the area, heavily shelled by enemy artillery. No acknowledgement or credit; however, was ever given him personally for this very small, but extremely important life saving action!

The Presidential Unit Citation is awarded to the 1st Battalion, as Major General Walter Lauer, 99th Division Commander, pins the ribbon on Lt. Col. Robert IL Douglas, commanding officer of the lst Battalion.
