I FELT GUILTY. I did. Sloane and Lovie were reading the news about Amanda Lawson’s freak accident that left her drowned in the Delaware River near the bank behind the Riverview Inn. The author of the article speculated that she’d slipped on the ice, hit her head, and fallen into the water. We all concluded that Donna had something to do with it. Sloane attended the funeral without anyone seeing her and there were whispers among the crafty women in the back that confirmed they believed it, too.

“They weren’t happy about it, either. Three witches I hadn’t seen before were only there to check out the scene and gather information.”

“Did you get any names?” Maya asked.

“Dina?” Sloane said. Maya took the journal out of the drawer, waited for the names to appear, and then dragged her finger down the list of witches as she read. “Dina Reynolds.” She took the book with her to the computer and pulled Dina Reynolds up on Facebook. She, of course, was Janine Smith’s friend. Our fake profile had befriended almost every witch and half of the town. “Was this one of them?”

Sloane stared at the screen as Maya flipped through some more pictures. “That’s her. Donna should watch out for her. According to the photos, Dina really liked Amanda.”

“As much as they really like anyone,” Ever said.

Sloane tilted her head toward my daughter. “Now that you mention it, she did seem angrier at Donna for killing her than she was that Amanda was dead.”

“Of course she was. They’re evil, which is why I don’t want to have a party,” I said with my arms crossed at my chest. The subject had already been brought up five times, and no one listened to me. I was adamant. Isaiah’s house burning down still left a mark. As far as I was concerned, we should be spending every waking moment monitoring our plan to rid the area of the Virago.

“Bah humbug,” Sloane said.

“Wrong holiday.” It wasn’t that I didn’t want to celebrate the new year. Actually, it was. I didn’t feel like I could relax. I rolled my head and rubbed my neck. Maybe the stress was getting to me.

“We’re safe here. We should enjoy it. This town was given to us by our ancestors. If nothing else, that’s reason alone to celebrate another year beginning.”

Lovie started preparing the food that night. She worked for three days. I cleaned the house. Gisel went to the party store and brought home enough horns, hats, and eyeglasses in the shape of the year for fifty people. Even though it was only going to be a family affair, the guest list had crept up to include Denny Taylor, the Hitchners, Maya’s boyfriend, Mick, and his parents. The girls also invited Ike—of course—Sam, and Paul Wentzel, whose parents had been invited, too.

Sloane invited Sean Watts and made me wonder if he was the whole reason in the first place for the party. A few others we hadn’t seen in twenty years made the list.
