When I drove to the newspaper office, I rehearsed what I was going to say to Randi. The speech about how we need to take a step back for Carter’s sake. I’d convinced myself we were better off keeping our hands to ourselves, and our clothes on.

But the second I saw her sitting behind her desk, everything I planned to say unraveled.

All I could remember was the way her tongue felt sliding against mine in the pantry. The way she possessively grips my clothes, begging me to devour her. Now that the taste of her sweet pussy dances on my tongue, I’ll never be the fucking same.

“I, uh, thank you?” Randi says in an awkward question as I pull into my driveway.

“For replacing the breaker or for eating you out?”

“Both?” She’s suddenly shy around me, which is both adorable and frustrating.

This is the moment we should clear the air. We should figure out how to navigate whatever is happening between us. But the words are strangled in my throat. “Carter told me you don’t have your Christmas tree decorated yet.”

“I don’t.”

I push open my door. “Then let’s decorate your tree.”

“Turner—”

I close my door and move around the truck to open hers. “C’mon. Night’s a wasting.”

“Is this a good idea?”

I can’t help but let out a gruff laugh. “Little late for that question now, isn’t it?” I take her hand to make sure she won’t run away from me. “Let’s get some lights and ornaments on your tree. It’s Christmas, Randi.”

“Well, technically it’s Christmas Eve Eve.”

“That’s not a thing.”

She bites the bottom of her lip. “That’s what I told Tom.”

My first instinct is to bristle with possessive jealousy. But the feeling quickly subsides as I recall Tom is the kid, fresh out of college, who works for her. Randi’s never been into younger guys. Tom’s not a threat to claiming what’s mine.

She unlocks the door, inviting me in.

“How does it feel to have a night off?” she asks, slipping out of her coat and hanging it on a hook.

My gaze sweeps over her curvy figure in that sweater dress. Fuck I love the holidays. “I miss him, of course. But I’m glad he’s bonding with Char.”

“You’re so lucky to have your aunt and uncle in your life.” Her smile is genuine but laced with a hint of sadness.

“They love you, too, you know.” I leave my coat draped over a chair and kick off my boots. I set my sight on the box of decorations beside the bare tree to make sure I don’t do something foolish like blurt out that I love her. I’ve always loved her as a friend. But deep down, I suspect it’s always been more. Whatever the feelings, I’m not ready to war with them now. The future is complicated, and I’m not ready to deal with it yet.

“A couple of strings of lights don’t work. Well, half of them don’t. I meant to get new ones.”

“But you were too busy taking care of everyone else?”
