TWELVE

Costello left, muttering about getting some clarity on what had happened in the minutes before Rachel died. She was planning a reconstruction of the events with a view to establishing the timing involved, after reading Carol’s statement and comparing it to Callaghan’s.

She left, closing the door behind her with a degree of force.

As soon as it closed, Anderson flicked her a V and sat back down, sitting for a minute or two in the peace and quiet before he pulled the computer mouse towards him and started to scroll, but his mind wasn’t on it. His eyes fixed on the wall beyond, looking at the pictures of the wedding party, Naomi appearing young and carefree. The last four years had destroyed her. Her smile was dazzling, looking over to her right, to somebody off camera whom she was pleased to see. How big would that smile be when she saw her son?

Then he got up, standing close to the wall, starting to move the photographs by unpinning and pinning them, keeping them within their quarter-hour time bands but getting a better sense of time. He knew he was tracking Naomi. Most of the pictures were of Natalie and Niles, but he studied each one of Naomi and looked closer. Who was she talking to? Who was she looking at? Richard was in most of them, standing behind her, dressed in a good shirt and trousers, his hands behind his back as if he was walking behind the Queen. Naomi was dressed in a bright turquoise-blue dress – shapely, he would have called it. Her brown hair was longer then, wound up on top of her head. There was one picture, the four of them: Natalie, Naomi, Niles and Richard. Three of them were looking straight at the camera, Naomi looking past it, smiling. That picture was in the section from two fifteen to two thirty. He scanned the rest of them, looking to see if he could find a view from the other side. Naomi must have been looking at her son, surely, with that expression.

But if not? He scanned the photographs, pulling out the images of four men that Naomi seemed to smile at more than others. They could be close friends, but the man with the black hair down to his collar? He looked like one to watch. He put the photos on Vik’s desk, the images of those of interest to be isolated, cleaned up and laminated.

At two o’clock, Costello parked across the road from the Quarterhouse Deli and called across to Wyngate and Redding to get her a tuna melt bagel and a tea. She then opened Google Maps and studied the streets around the Maltman, mentally placing where Callaghan, Rachel and Mr Baseball had come from, so she could claim it was a working lunch. After doing the run a few times, she bet Ruby would be up for the fudge and coconut Maisy Daisy.

While drinking his coffee, Wyngate explained that he wanted Costello to jog slowly, at the same speed that Rachel had used on the tape.
