Matt met with graduate student intern psychologist Barbara once a week. At first I accompanied him. It was there, in Barbara’s office, where Matt said he didn’t feel love. He said it plain-faced, but with concern. He knew he should feel something, he said. We’d been to the theatre to see the movie Atonement and he told her how my sniffling at the end confused him, how everyone’s wet eyes didn’t make sense.

“It’s like I’m alone and thirsty in the desert,” he’d told her. “There is a glass of water within my reach. I can see it and I want it but I can’t figure out how to get it.”

I could tell Barbara thought he was brilliant. It seemed the thing to do, according to Barbara, was to treat recovery as a scientist would, with a sense of simple curiosity. Could we give that a try? And practice smiling in the mirror. Every day make faces at yourself. Treat this as a fun way to get to know yourself again, and don’t worry too much.
