Marketing Plans

He was starting to feel quite irritated by the constant intrusion in his otherwise usually quiet and solitary life. His team kept advising him that it was only temporary and he needed to stay close to the detail whilst the project was expanding but the never-ending meetings, emails and telephone calls were getting too much. The latest request from Wilmore had made him feel quite uncomfortable but he couldn’t quite figure out why.

Earlier in the week, he had met with the Marketing Director who had wanted to speak to him about an idea that one of his team wanted to be considered.

“So, we need to focus on the Christmas market,” he had said. “Kids these days always make long lists for Santa which have got to be hard to deliver on.”

Chris nodded, it certainly did seem kids wanted more and more each year.

The Marketing Director had continued, “If we can make the Alterworld app popular and involving as many kids as possible, we could make additional bonus credit packages the ‘must have’ gift this year! It would appeal to the eco-friendly audience, cutting out the waste of toy packaging and gift wrap.”

What he didn’t mention was the potential profits the company would make, which Chris assumed would be huge.

“The strategy will include sufficient ‘freebies’ for new players to wear, including caps and sweatshirts, so that it is clear who is in the ‘world’ and who isn’t,” he had said. “With the television adverts and pop-up ads on public transport, you won’t be able to get away from it.”

Chris thought it sounded all a bit pushy but knew he also stood to gain. The idea of being a household name did excite him and he thought it would be easiest to just agree.

“We will increase the number of bonus credits for successfully answering the first few educational quizzes, so that players can get enough to create their ‘Kinman’ more quickly,” the Director had said. “Once they have their virtual character they can begin creating their world and we know from the stats that once they reach a certain point the game becomes quite addictive. It is then that the credits will be harder to come by…”

“…making them want to purchase extra ones rather than winning them,” Chris had said, finishing his sentence.

It was a tried and tested marketing ploy and although it didn’t feel quite right, he thought he should trust the experts. He had hoped the popularity of the game would grow naturally but what did he know?

Having just received a call to tell him the app had reached number one in the ratings, Chris knew he should be riding on the wave of success. He didn’t want to appear ungrateful but he had a nagging doubt about the promotional plan.

As a child, he had always quite enjoyed the festive traditions which his mum put a lot of effort in to. He fondly remembered back to one particular Christmas when all he had wanted was a new science kit which his teacher had recommended.
