Pete emptied the dregs of his coffee cup into his garbage can, banging it on the side of the metal can to make sure it was empty. He put his feet on the edge of his new desk beside his laptop and pondered the wording of the announcement. It was the type of story that tweaked his interest. Newsroom chatter filtered through his aquarium walls like white noise. It helped him to think. Deciding to investigate further, he double clicked on other websites reporting on the outbreak.

Something didn’t sit right with him. Tapping his yellow HB pencil on his desk, he roamed the Internet. Since the article in the St. Lucia Voice, the number of deaths had increased to over 50 in a three-week period. It had now made the webpage of the World Health Organization as part of an announcement that they were sending a representative to St. Lucia.

Pete’s interest was piqued; it was time to push the envelope. Standing up, he hitched up his jeans and waved to Rick through the glass wall, motioning him to come in to his office. Rick mouthed the words “what for?” but Pete’s waving didn’t stop. Seeing the excitement of his long time friend, he stuck his head round the door of Pete’s office.

“What the hell has got into you, for God’s sake?”

“Come and have a look at this. Doesn’t this seem strange to you?”

Rick worked his way around the boxes of files stacked around Pete’s office, looking at the screen. Pete pointed to some words. Rick scanned the monitor.

“What? What the hell Pete? So what? I think you’re losing it my friend.”

“Look, every single death certificate on record in St. Lucia that I pulled from the St. Lucia coroner’s office has the same thing on them. There’s something weird going on. Check out these certificates. I’m just showing you three, but I’ve pulled up more. What’s the one thing that’s on all of them?”

“Ok, that’s enough, what is it, for Christ sake? I have my own shit to do.”

“None of them were Catholic,” said Pete.

“Big deal Pete, maybe there aren’t many Catholics on the island?”

“Listen Rick, you know I do my homework. Since all this information is in the public domain what I did was, for each person that kicked the bucket, I pulled their birth certificates to see if they were baptized and if so which religion they fell under. So here is the kicker, with a population of around 170,000 on a small isolated island where the majority of people are Catholic, not one - and I mean not one - of the deaths from this virus thing hit them. And to add to this, I have since noticed that the numbers of dead are increasing and again no Catholics. Don’t you think that is just a little strange?”

“Ok, my man, maybe a little, but I repeat, big deal.”

“Well, it just gets me interested. There’s something there, I know it. You and I have been reporters for too long. With the statement from the government plus the U.
