‘To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.’

Gautama Buddha

Of all the Heavenly virtues, Diligence is regarded as being the most noblest.

From Buddhism to Christianity and those following Hindu beliefs, diligence of mind is seen as essential in the advancement of a believer’s spiritual path, in this life time to some and in all lifetimes to come to others.

Presented as persistence of spirit, the importance of diligence in an individual is viewed in differing reasons in cultures around the world.

Buddhists see the virtue as being of upmost importance in the practice of meditation, where in cultivating diligence leads to the avoidance of any distraction caused by diligence’s opposing force, the deadly sin of sloth.

Christianity, or more notably the Roman Catholic Church, has the view that on having diligence of character an individual shows the traits of dependability and a zeal for life. These qualities are needed for entrance into Heaven and all continued within.

The characteristics of persistence and effort are also well documented within Greek mythology by Homer, throughout his epic tale of the Odyssey, where Odysseus persisted through great hardships on his immense journey of courage and self-discovery.
