I drink to push away the pain, then I drink to forget about Amy. I’ve already had too much to drink by then…but I drink some more. Nim shouldn’t—couldn’t—have known about Amy, but somehow she did. If she’d asked the right person, they’d have told her we’d been dating when she disappeared. That the sheriff brought me in for questioning like a fucking criminal.

Her eyelashes flutter when I rub the warm seam between her legs through her flimsy underwear. Her legs are up, her thighs pressed against my waist like she’s holding me in place. Which is fine by me, because I’m not letting her go.

“Did Romi tell you why we’re called the Serpents?”

“No. But I’m guessing it’s because you can do whatever you want and get away with it.”

“I was the first Serpent. Eliza christened me with the nickname in our senior year of high school. The same month Amy went missing.”

The words roll off my tongue like someone else is controlling my vocal cords.

Nim’s lips tremble at my revelation, but she doesn’t seem surprised. How much does she know? “You and Amy… dated?”

“Eliza thought I had something to do with my girlfriend’s disappearance. When I wasn’t arrested, she thought I’d somehow slithered my way out of a criminal charge. Used my father’s influence, or my trust fund, or some shit.”

I push aside Nim’s underwear, my eyes locked onto hers as I glide a finger through her wet folds. I can feel her every hitching breath as she lies sprawled beneath me, and I won’t lie—it makes me rock-hard just thinking how easily I could fuck her.

“Snake, serpent, viper. She had a bunch of names for me. Every day she’d find some new way to torment me for the fact that her best friend was gone because she was convinced I was responsible.”

Nim makes a soft sound in the back of her throat, her hand digging between us. At first I think she wants to stop me, but then she slides her hand under the waistband of my boxers, wraps her fingers around my dick, and pumps me. Maybe it’s a reward for telling her all of this, maybe she’s just drunk and horny. I thrust a second finger in with the first, and watch as Nim’s lips part on a gasp. Her eyes fall half-shut as if she’s struggling to keep them open.

“Jackson couldn’t have been more wrong. If she’d stopped for one second to think, she’d have known I had nothing to do with it.” My voice becomes rough and ragged. “I loved Amy. I was going to marry that girl.”

Nim’s hazel eyes are glued to mine. It feels so good what she’s doing, but it’s fucking with my head because these aren’t pleasant memories I’m reliving.

“We were dating, but it was more than that,” I tell her, thrusting hard. “I was infatuated with Amy. That was the problem. People saw how obsessed I was. How possessive I became. Eliza began spreading rumors, saying she’d seen me come unhinged around Amy.
