Sarra roused herself in the late afternoon.

With her eyes still closed, she breathed a deep sigh and burrowed into the blankets covering her, revisiting the sweet dreams of the man who had abducted her just a day and a half ago. How did he sway my opinions of him in such a short time?

Her body angled itself toward one side of the bed, her arm outstretched, and one of her hands dangled over the edge nearest to the chair Ares had sat in before she had fallen asleep. Sarra’s eyes opened instantly, a soft sound of alarm escaping her at the memory of their conversations earlier in the morning. She pulled her rogue limb back toward her body as if she had touched an open flame with her bare fingertips, and her heart thrummed fast inside her chest, expecting him to be gone. After locating it, she wrapped it around her shoulders, fastened the small latch to hold it together at the top of her breastbone, and securely clutched the material with her hands.

Sarra watched as Ares straightened himself after he woke, immediately fumbling to replace his blindfold, and he sat upright with a small smile aimed directly at her. “No, there is precious little I can do during the day besides sit in the sun.” His smile grew into a teasing grin, the tone of his voice shifting into a lighthearted melody that made Sarra’s heart leap. “Besides, someone needs to make sure you do not escape.”

Despite reality crashing around her, Sarra struggled to brush the remnants of her dreams of him from her head. Even as he spoke and interacted with her, those moments of make believe had felt more real than him sitting next to her beside the bed. Her selfishness distorted her from the truths she knew in her heart, but with a deep breath, Sarra shined her brightness upon him in a brilliant,
