THE NEXT PART was a daze because the blood was filling my head and my insides were in knots, and all I wanted was for it to happen. George took everyone back to the main room, where the previous closeness had now evolved into actual couplings, with open kissing and fondling, dirty dancing and exposed flesh. He stopped the music to announce the game, with cheers and whistles greeting the words ‘The Secret Room’.

I couldn’t concentrate as he went through the rules to the uninitiated. All I could do was scour the crowd to find that face. And there it was: that little knowing smile as ever on his lips. I couldn’t drag my eyes off him, it was like beholding your own executioner, but my pussy was wet and begging and I knew I wanted him to have me. George produced the bag to make the draw from, reiterating that there was only one black bead and only two green. The nerves and excitement bubbled all around and found outlets in raucous giggles and loud obscene promises of what one would do to others if they got the chance. They wouldn’t get the chance, of course, because this time it was mine. The wary held back while the eager jumped forward to pick a bead, hurrying away to sneak a look in private, some incapable of hiding their relief or disappointment. I hung back for a long time and then George was there and telling me to pick. I did as the others, feigning overt apprehension, although there was nothing pretend about my quivering hand. I slunk off to a corner to peek at the bead, sensing all eyes on me but actually seeing none, feeling my stomach flip and fall away as I opened my palm to reveal a single white bead.

The shiver ran from head to toe and weakened my legs. I felt like crying out that it had gone wrong, that it wasn’t how it was meant to be. And then I remembered that it was a trick, that there was no black bead, only white; everyone would pick a white one except for Giles and his girlfriend, who would be given the green, whether or not they knew it already, and only George and I knew that with no black bead, it was safe for me to claim the role of victim. I watched George go through his theatrics, joking with Bunny to put it back
