GARDEN THIEVES The typical kitchen garden had light walls, to provide excellent support for fruit trees and also valuable protection against both animals and thieves. Sometimes, to prevent stealing, drastic measures were used. The tops of the walls were smeared with an indelible mixture of red ocher and grease. In the days when children often had only one pair of pants, the next step was to keep your eyes peeled for passing trouser seats!

DICKON’S COTTAGE GARDEN

The secret garden was not the only one Dickon worked in. Round the cottage on the moor there was a piece of ground enclosed by a low wall of rough stones. Early in the morning and late in the fading twilight and on all the days Colin and Mary did not see him, Dickon worked there planting or tending potatoes and cabbages, turnips and carrots and herbs for his mother.
