22nd September

Next Saturday, Durga, Shiv, Vipul and I met outside the Select City mall. For the first time I saw Durga in regular clothes. She was in a simple salwar kurta and had a cloth bag slung across her shoulder and she was wearing these pretty dangling earrings. Clearly she was pretty thrilled with herself walking about in a mall with three guys in tow.

‘Aha!’ Shiv grinned. ‘The arty look!’

‘I like Indian clothes.’ She preened a bit. ‘They suit my figure.’

Vipul stuck out a hand. ‘Vipul, Akash’s friend. He never remembers to introduce me.’ And I had to apologize.

Shiv said, ‘He talks about you a lot.’

‘Well I’ve known him since we were in the Class 4,’ Vipul began, ‘so if you need any stories about the adventures of Akash Narain I’m the person to ask.’

The four of us sat in a coffee shop and talked about movies and music, cricket and books . . . it was great! I noticed that Durga and Vipul had really struck it off. Shiv noticed it too and rolled his eyes at me with a sneaky grin.

Sipping a tall glass of mochaccino Durga asked Shiv, ‘That day at the pool, what did you mean when you said that you knew what Shaurya was planning for the math’s test?’

‘Well, I was just guessing,’ Shiv said, ‘because Akash hasn’t told me anything but that Shaurya was up to something on the day of the maths test. Something that scared our friend here so bad he’d gone pale.’

Durga turned to me. ‘What?’

Finally I was no longer afraid of talking about it. Also why should I have protected Shaurya when he was bullying me? I realized that it was better if Shiv and Durga knew, so I told them everything.

Shiv’s eyes were wide in shock. ‘He asked you openly, just like that?’

‘Not ask, he took it for granted that I’d obey him. It was an order.’

Vipul munched a chocolate muffin. ‘It is so weird.

Wasn’t he afraid that Akash would tell a teacher?’

‘No he’s not,’ Durga said shortly, ‘because he always gets away. Haven’t you guys noticed, even Mohite ma’am can’t get him punished.’

‘That’s what puzzles me,’ I said, ‘why is he allowed to behave like this?’

‘I don’t exactly know . . . he did the same thing to me, by the way,’ Durga said quietly, making us turn and look at her in surprise.

‘To you?’ Vipul looked shocked.

‘Yup. I joined this school last year. It was just like what happened with Akash. In my old school my results were good. Also Ma worked here and she was convinced that I should study here because she said it had advantages. God knows what those advantages are! She kept begging Mr Trivedi to give me a chance and finally the school offered me a scholarship. I wasn’t really interested in shifting but Ma wanted me to. And you guys know her.’ Shiv and I nodded understandingly. ‘It is very hard to fight her when she is determined to do something.’

‘Then what happened?’ Vipul leaned forward.
