The security team was making its way along the long corridor in our direction, firing their weapons at us. They were shooting, but it seemed they weren’t trying to hit us, just back us into the hangar. At last Kate had found her way to the lower levels. I’d hoped we’d have had enough time to find a way to stop the drones already in flight, but she was a step ahead of us.

At least we’d prevented the remaining drones from launching. I assumed Magnus wanted the enabling unit to prevent them from being reactivated. The big question was: if only Nat and I could get down there – and we hadn’t set off the drones – who had? And what access did they have to this bunker?

Nat had a plan. She’d spotted something earlier among the drones and she thought we had a way out. As for Mum, James and Simon, they’d have to fend for themselves. I was going to give them a tip-off, though, since Kate might already have had security teams on their level. I used the comms tab to alert Mum. She told me that troopers had entered Level 3 too. They were preparing to hide to buy themselves more time.

I could see what Nat was leading me towards now. I contacted Magnus.

‘Magnus, we’re going to try and get to one of the other Quadrants. Can you communicate with them yet?’

‘I’m just on to it.’

‘We’re going to try for Quadrant 4. Can you tell them we’re coming?’

‘Will do. Good luck!’

I hoped Kate didn’t have comms tab access yet. They’d only just reached the lower levels, so I reckoned we still had a bit longer to communicate with each other securely.

Nat spotted a transporter unit, much like the one we’d used earlier when we were first reunited. They seemed to have those things all over the place down here. She thought we could use it to make our escape, but unlike the elevator it wasn’t clear how it worked. Still, we didn’t have many options, so I agreed with Nat – we had to try. If they reached us while we were holding the enabling device, not only could they force Nat and me to give them access to the other Quadrants, but they could also launch the remaining drones.

We stepped on the transporter. Next to it was a pile of boxes neatly stacked – it seemed to be there primarily to transport things rather than people. We both scanned the control panel, desperately trying to remember what we did before. We placed our hands on the main panel. The transporter gave a jolt, just like the elevator did earlier, as if it had recognized us in some way. Unlike the elevators, there were no numbers on this fascia and we had to take pot luck to try and guess which of the weird symbols would take us to Quadrant 4.

The doors slid open and we could see the security teams in front of us.
