Operation Barbarossa marked an escalation of the Second World War both geographically and in the formation of the Allied coalition. On Sunday, 22 June 1941, three million men of the Axis powers, the largest invasion force in the history of warfare, invaded the Soviet Union along a 1,800 mile front. In addition to troops, the Wehrmacht deployed some 600,000 motor vehicles and between 600,000 and 700,000 horses for support operations. The operation stemmed from Hitler’s ideological aims to target and conquer the western Soviet Union: so that it could be repopulated by Germans for Lebensraum (living space); to acquire the oil reserves of the Caucasus and the agricultural resources of Soviet territories; to use the Slav peoples as slave labour, culling all inferior non-Aryan Untermenschen (racially inferior). Eradication of the communist ideology and european Jewry were included in the ‘grand’ purpose.
