Chapter 5

Pack War

*****

Matt

We arrived at the airport in San Francisco in the late afternoon. We were booked into a nearby hotel for the night. In the morning we would be briefed and find out the details of what we were going to be dealing with. I could smell other wolves on the flight with us and even more at the airport. I thought it best to keep our distance and Sally agreed. A few stared at us, but I just stared back. Few were alphas and the few that were didn’t seem ready to fight at the airport. We turned away together almost as if we had reached an unspoken agreement. This happened four times before we managed to get to the car rental place. So far the trip hadn’t been glamorous. The flight was economy, the food on the plane substandard, and the motel the worst I had ever stayed in. I was beginning to realize Mom’s standards had always been high because these travel arrangements left much to be desired.

It made me wonder if they were testing me, or simply preparing me for what the future would hold should I become part of one of their organizations. Sally didn’t seem to be surprised with anything so I made no comments. I didn’t want her to think I was a wussy who couldn’t handle roughing it. I was a dad-gummed boy scout. I had roughed it many times in places with no heat, air conditioning, or water. It was just that I had expected better. Mom would say I was spoiled and maybe she was right, but I wanted more for Sally. It was kinda funny since Sally didn’t seem to mind at all.

“Hungry?” I asked Sally as I watched her amazed at the amount she was putting away. We had gone to some chain restaurant with a big buffet. It was one of those that had food from around the world. Sally had a little of everything and I do mean everything. She had four plates and a soup bowl. It was a lot even for a werewolf. Maybe I just hadn’t noticed, but I had never seen her eat so much at one sitting. I know wolves ate more than humans, but not usually that much.

She turned beet red and then replied. “I’ve never tried most of these things. Not even some of this Italian food and that’s my favorite type.”

“Sweetie, they’re gonna think I starved you for a week.” I smiled with amusement. She was such a tiny thing and several big guys that looked like body builders were watching her eat just like I was.

“Do you want me to stop eating?”

“No, but I reserve the right to tease you about it all I want to.”

She smiled and went back to wiping out all the food on the plate right in front of her. Sally was a lot older than me even though she didn’t look it, but she still had very little experience away from the pack.
